My Review
This is quite a small book (43 pages) and can be read in an hour or so. I got this as a Freebie on Amazon, so couldn't really go wrong here.
The book is aimed at the amateur who is thinking of taking up walking as a hobby / as an aid to weight loss. The following is covered:
- why choose walking
- calories / lets look at the numbers
- how to loose even more calories
- techniques and right postures
- set goals
- track your progress
- how to start and finish your walk
While a lot of it is common sense, I think this book can serve as a great starting point and motivation to get you up and going and keep at it. It provides us with the basics and I did find the information about calories and techniques / postures most interesting. I picked up some very good tips, i.e. plan your route and fruit is a good thing to eat before and after. Most important is to develop a routine. At the end, you can read all the books you want, but you have to keep at it.
One thing I would disagree though, and this is with the claim in the product description that you can lose weight by walking without diet. Whilst this is probably strictly speaking true, I think it is important to point out that a sensible diet is also required. It is mentioned within the book, just not in the product description and I think this is actually wrong.

My Review
The reason I bought this book is because it states 'guide to weight loss motivation' rather than another diet book. Let's face it - lots of us who are on diets have been on several ones, tried lots, have probably their favourite, some work, some don't for us. What we really do need is motivation to carry on. This book actually provides both.
The author looks at why different types of diet don't work that well or make it difficult for us to keep to, the causes as to why we falter how we try to cheat ourselves and what it takes - lots of sacrifice, dedication, discipline and determination. Further he identifies steps to help us and what hinders us. All of those can be applied to all diets and not just a specific one. As a bonus, the Kindle version also contains some healthy recipes and a short chapter on the Paelo Diet.
There were a few things which I did find puzzling and confusing though. For example, in Chapter 6.7. Avoid creamy sauces. That much we know. But it is than further said after that headline that 'recent studies have claimed that dairy products can in fact contribute to weight gain ….. Avoid or lessen your diary intake.' That may be true also but not all diary is creamy sauces? Ok, maybe I'm being picky here - excuse the pun. Maybe a bit more specific which diary is better and which one not so.
Overall, there is a lot of very good information provided, and for me, it did mainly serve as motivation guide. I also liked that no specific diet is named as such (apart from the Paelo diet in the bonus chapter which the author sanctions.

When reviewing a health / diet book, I think it is important to distinguish between the review for the book (ie. is it easy to understand / scientifically explained / recipes etc) and a review of the actual diet (did I do the diet / is it do-able and most importantly - did it work)
Here is a review of the book contents:
Diet two days a week, Eat normally for five.
The basis of this diet is that you should stick to very low calories and restricted amounts of food for 2 days, and for the rest of the week, you can eat … well, not everything you want, but what is considered a healthy diet.
The book starts of with explaining the obesity crisis etc and gives a detailed description of the science behind the diet program offered and why it works. I find this actually really good and that makes it stand out for my from other diet books I have read. It explains why it is considered a very healthy lifestyle - long term and short term goal. Than the actual diet is explained -> how to do the two restricted days and what to eat (mainly protein, dairy and veg), and how/what to eat on the 5 unrestricted days. There are further chapters on 'moving more' (the type you actually find in any diet book), how to stay slim once you reached your target weight and also recipes. Appendixes show exactly what food and how much of it you can eat.
What I found very good were case studies and 'your question answered' at the end of chapters. I found the book very clear written and the science certainly sounds convincing. Once you read yourself through it, your are ready to go.
------
Ok, and since you are reading this review I presume you would like to try a dieting programme and would like to know: Did it work for you?? and the short answer is : No. While the book is very clear and well written, I found it to hard to stick to and too restrictive and not liveable for a full time working woman with 3 children and a house to run. Exactly how much one can eat of everything was a bit confusing. Also, I didn't always have that much protein-based food stuff in the house (with 3 hungry teenage boys!). Saying all this, my (single and unattached) work colleague has been doing it and lost weight for a while but than also gave up. But she says if she would ever go on it again she knows she would lose weight again. Long sigh……..
