First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intro is hosted by Diane at Bibliophile By The Sea.

This is how it works: Write down either the first paragraph of a book your are currently reading / intending to read or read in the past and share with us. I do like a good opening!

My current read is Hollow Shotguns by Khalid Patel. A review book I received. I have reviewed for this author before, and I do like his very unusual style and incredible way with words. This is a story of 5 teenagers caught up in a zombie apocalypse. Not for everyone, admittedly, but a bit of an usual take on the subject. So if you are a fan of the genre and are a bit fed up of 'same old, same old', might want to give this one a try.

WARNING- swearing / descriptions of violence and blood throughout.

Opening paragraph:

"Man, this is fucking in-SANE!" He sways the bat back, unleashes the tool of hurt. The wood defiles the frail flesh, brittle bone.
A crimson warmth mists their countenances.
Scarlet ink seeps from the splintered skull, now scattered about the room.
An exultant Slash kneels from the force of his swing, throat trobbing mirth. Never has wild execution felt so satisfying.
Body tissues hang soaked in adrenaline. Smiles, blood sully visages.

• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

From Hollow Shotguns by Khalid Patel:

Few of the school's prisoner's were expected to succeed. the males, if not incarcerated, would work the city factories, continuing the labour of their fathers. The girls would become destitute mothers, compliant housewives, or, if fortunate, underpaid beauticians. The prettier ones would perhaps befriend the pole.

My current read is Cats, Scarves and Liars by Kathryn White. A review book I received and as I love cats, this just sounds perfect. The book is not too long, 188 pages so makes a perfect quick read.

Opening paragraph:

It started with a small voice.
‘Ouch.’
Ouch, Peppa wondered as she placed the kettle on the
stove. Just last week she had found the vintage, 1970s style
stovetop kettle at a market and could not resist handing over
the asking price of two dollars (yes, just two dollars, the
stallholder had assured her, a true bargain, never to be seen
again,) and Peppa had happily been using it to boil water
for her morning coffee ever since.
‘Ouch!’
This time, the voice was a little louder.

From Cats, Scarves and Liars by Kathryn White:

‘His name is Charles,’ Peppa said, listening as he
began to purr. ‘Not Sylvester. And he’s a nasty little traitor.’

I am currently reading Book 2 Tearing Down Walls in the Love Under Construction Series by Deanndra Hall. The books are not supposed to be stand-alone, and are meant to be read one after the other. It is a romance / erotic story and aimed for over 18's only.
Chapter 1
"Hey cuz! How's it going?" Vic asked when he answered the call from his cousin,  Tony Walters.
"It's all going great. They've got the plans done, so maybe we can go over them next week. In the meantime, I've got a favour to ask," Tony told him.
"Name it." He'd gladly do it, whatever it was. Tony had been his boss until just a couple of weeks before but had stepped down to go into semi-retirement; Tony's son, Clayton, had taken the reins. But Vic's new position as president of the Walters Construction Lexington office didn't mean he saw Tony as any less of an authority figure. In reality, Tony seemed much more like a father figure to Vic than a cousin or brother, even though he was only a few years older.
"McCoy called me yesterday. Seems he has a club in Lexington. Know anything about it?" Tony asked.
"No, news to me." Steve owned a club?

From: Tearing Down Walls (Love under Construction Series) by Deanndra Hall

"Oh my god, I haven't been in a club like this in, well…. a long time. Does Tony know…"
'I have no idea. Never thought to ask. It's not like I keep it a secret or anything."

This is how it works: Write down either the first paragraph of a book your are currently reading / intending to read or read in the past and share with us. I do like a good opening!

This is the next book I am going to start in a couple of days:

The Groundbreaking (Love under Construction Series prequel) by Deandra Hall

The introductory volume to the Love Under Construction Series, this quick read introduces you to the major characters in the series. The books within the series are not stand-alone, and reading this one will help the reader understand them better. All other books in this series are full-length novels.

Meet the Walters family of Louisville, Kentucky, and their extended family and friends. This introductory volume introduces the reader to the major characters in the series and gives some insight into what makes them who they are in a series of vignettes from their pasts. From Tony, the owner of the family construction business who's still dealing with his mentally-unstable ex-wife, to Steve, his attorney who also owns a security firm (and a BDSM club too) while he holds everyone at arms-length, to a widow, Nikki, who thinks her life is pretty well over, there's plenty of drama, fun, and white-hot, sex-filled romance to keep readers entertained for hours. There's Kelly, working in the insurance industry while no one knows her past; Jose, a former cage fighter-turned-personal security specialist; and Molly, a woman spurned in the worst of ways. Laura's clothes cover a painful secret that could get her killed, and Peyton, the wholesome boy next door, struggles with an injury from his service in Kandahar. And don't forget Vic, Tony's cousin and the manager of the construction company's Lexington office, who's six feet and eight inches of the hottest Italian the United States was lucky enough to find on their shores. This introductory work introduces readers to the major characters in the series and is a quick read; the four volumes to follow are full-length novels. None of the volumes are stand-alone and are written to be read in order to get the most enjoyment from them. Use The Groundbreaking as your portal - jump in and find out who lives, who dies, and who finds the love of their life. It's a rollicking good time, between the sheets and out!

First paragraph:

Welcome to the Commonwealth of Kentucky!
The city of Louisville, Kentucky, occupies four hundred square miles of riverfront property on the Ohio River. Even though the city also knows as "The Ville" or "da Ville" doesn't seem like a southern city, it is physically below the Mason-Dixon line, the imaginary line of demarcation for the southern states. Most of its residents sincerely consider themselves southerners, and they will let you know in no uncertain terms.

My current read is Kingsland Book 3 The Heir by Deborah Hill.
It is a family saga and historical romance.

The Morning Sun danced in Kingsland's dining room chandelier, sprinkling the walls with small rainbows. Emily Merrick dreamed among them, drifting slowly along until Mother said her name, sharply, as though she'd spoken before, probably just a  few minutes ago.
"Sorry," Emily said, without meaning it. "What did you say, Mother?"
"I asked if Charles was taking you to the party tonight."
"No, I thought I'd walk over. Than, if it's boring, I can come home whenever I want to."
Thus eliminating an opportunity for Charles Sinclair to kiss her goodnight, as he so loved to do.

"You've really saved my skin," she said, regaining her shredded poise. "Charles can ge very insistent."

My current read is a historic novel which I received for review. I'm currently reading Book 1 of 3 of The Kingsland Series - This is the House by Deborah Hill.

Blurb:

Hannah Deems renounced her Quaker community when she married. As a result, there was no one to whom she could turn when, by the end of The War for Independence, she found herself widowed and destitute. Then Seth Adams came by; he offered to take her with him, back to his place on Cape Cod. An unknown entity, at least Adams was willing to help. Hannah should have known that going with him would be, in fact, a bargain that included her body. But she must somehow provide for her little daughter, and so she accepted her fate.
Thus it was that Molly became known as the illegitimate child of a reprobate, consigned to a future not unlike that of her mother. In order to free herself, she must ensnare a man of humble origin who will accept her, love her, and whose successful career will help her to surmount her mother's shame. That man is Elijah Merrick, a young and enterprising sea captain who understands that in wooing and winning her, he will have to defend her from his mother, fight his Cape town's determination to ostracize her, and force the Church of the Standing Order, Congregational, to accept her. In this he succeeds --
But he cannot defeat Molly's attraction to Isaac Warden

It was a time of tumult and fear, of mourning and tears. Many men died in those years, and many despaired. But finally, the war for independence from England, in which America rarely won a battle, was finished.
From one village to the next, acres the farmlands in the hills of New England, over the gentle rises and falls of the Delaware Valley and the Shenandoah, onto the sprawling piedmont of the Southlands, the news of it spread, and thanksgiving rose up. Men embraced, and women wept the gentle, cleansing tears of joy. The farmer might return to his land, the fisher might return to his nets, and a man might speak his mind without committing treason. The old questions, the old loyalties, were laid to rest, and men turned to the business of the new nation, a gathering of sovereign states affirming their right to freedom and self governance.

From This is the House by Deborah Hill (Kingsland Book 1)

"Yes?"
The one word was spoken clearly, her voice perfectly suited to her face and the slight but well-formed figure hidden beneath her grey dress and its white, somewhat rumpled apron.
Elijah Merrick felt the blood in his veins stop coursing. From his sandy hair to his late booted feet, he felt his very life drain away.

Do you like historic romance novels?

I have signed up for Mental Health Awareness Month at Leah's blog Uncorked Thoughts.

MHAM

As part of this, I am reading The Shock After the Fall by Nathan Filer:

First Chapter:

I should say that I am not a nice person. Sometimes I try to be, but often I'm not. So when it was my turn to cover my eyes and count to a hundred - I cheated.

I stood at the spot where you had to stand when it was your turn to count, which was beside the recycling bins next to the shop selling disposable barbecues and spare tent pegs. And near to there is a small patch of overgrown grass, tucked away behind a water tap.
Except I don't remember standing there. Not really. You don't always remember the details like that, do you? You don't remember if you were beside the recycling bins, or further up the path near to the shower blocks and whether actually the water tap is up there?

From The Shock after the Fall by Nathan Filer:

"The next thing I knew Mum was turning up the volume of the radio, so I wouldn't hear her crying."

I haven't started the book yet, but hoping to do so this week. My daughter and me are going to read it, maybe me first because I'm a faster reader than her. Sorry Ruby :)

Happy reading my bookish friends

My current read is a review book from the Sci-Fi/ Alien genre - quite a change from my last read which was historic/erotic romance!
Let me introduce: This Changes Everything by Sally Ember Ed.D (The Spanners Vol I)

Chapter One
First Contact between the Many Worlds Collective (WMC) and Clara Branon, Ph.D., in Northern California, December, 2012.

The clear, cool, northern California night of December 21, 2012, I go to bed at around 8PM as I usually do. I always meditate in bed at the end of each day. As I near the end of my mediation, about to go to sleep, I hear several voices in a kind of chorus, speaking my name:
"ClaraBranon… ClaraBranon… ClaraBranon… ClaraBranon…"
They sound expectant, insistent, and are saying my names as if hey were all one word. Not loud, not scare, but right in my bedroom
Ridiculously, my first reaction is not fear but bewilderment, and a bit of resentment. Again? More interruptions of my sleep? What, now? Who are you and what do you want? Go away!

From This Changes Everything by Sally Ember Ed.D

It isn't just his words; this alien has some kind of soothing power. Nice. He must have been using this calming mojo ever since they got here. That explains a lot.

I know that Sci-Fi / Alien stories is not for everyone. I try to vary my reading a bit so enjoy this genre ever now and again. Tell me what you think.

Apple Tree Yard by Louise Doughty.
This book received lots of publicity here in the UK and is part of the Richard & Judy Book Club (similar to Oprah in the US) this spring.I read it on vacation within 2 days and loved it, still thinking about it 1 week later. Full review to follow.

Blurb:
Yvonne Carmichel has a high-flying career, a beautiful home and a good marriage. But when she meets a stranger she is drawn into a passionate affair. Keeping the two halves of her life separate seems easy at first. But she can't control what happens next.

Opening Paragraph / Prologue

The moment builds; it swells and builds - the moment when I realise we have lost. The young barrister, Ms Bonnard, is on her feet in front of me: a small woman, as you probably remember, auburn hair beneath the judicial wig. Her gaze is cool, her voice light. Her black robes look chic rather than sinister. She radiates calm, believability. I have been in the witness box for two days now and I am tired, really tired. Later, I will understand that Ms Bonnard chose this time of the day deliberately. She wasted quite a lot of time earlier in the afternoon, asking about my education, my marriage, my hobbies. She has been down so many different avenues that at first I am not alert to the fact that this new line of questioning has significance. The moment builds but slowly; it swells to its climax.

From : Apple Tree Yard by Louise Doughtly

'Going to have a bit of trouble explaining this one at home, aren't you?' His tone of voice is openly nasty now, which is less threatening than that smile.

I loved the book, I suggest give it a try and you'll be hooked within a few pages.

My current read is an eBook called Wherewolves by John Vamvas and Olga Montes. This is a YA novel about a group of teens who go on a weekend 'adventure' camp in the forest lead by their 'ex-military' teacher. But strange creatures are lurking, and it appears that their teacher has a somewhat different agenda to what they thought with this adventure camp.

Dilly runs. The deafening beat of there panting isn't enough to drown out the monstrous growls and trampling that rumble behind her. Though she can't see well enough to dodge the naked branches slicing into her, the full moon's rays help her find the path. This Way, the young woman tells herself, and takes a left. Now right!

From: Wherewolves by John Vamvas and Olga Montes

"Maybe you did this on purpose." He feels the veins throb in his temples.
"Really? And Why would I do that?" she says and continues to swing her feet.
"I don't know, you tell me. Maybe to sabotage the whole experiment.

O'Sullivan leans in. "So what are they?"
'I don't know," Brian tells him, "maybe some kind of … animals? I can't make them out."
"Animals? No, they're erect."

So, you think this could be the book for you?

First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intro is hosted by Diane at Bibliophile By The Sea.

This is how it works: Write down either the first paragraph of a book your are currently reading / intending to read or read in the past and share with us. I do like a good opening!

My current read is a book called Watchers of the Night by Matthew Keith (Book One of The Watchers). This is a YA novel about a High School boy with an extraordinary gift -he can leave his body at night and go anywhere and hear/see anything without being seen. I've almost finished it and couldn't put it down!

The muted glow of street lamps and stop lights shone down on a main intersection of small-town southern America. It was late, well past midnight. the streets were nearly empty of traffic, which only served to accentuate the oddity of the lone figure sitting motionlessly on a bench at one of the four corners. He sat with his head bowed and his hands in his laps, never bothering to look up when cars passed. It was a bench he visited often, and always at night. On rare occasions, people would pass by on foot. Even more infrequently, they would stop and sit with him. At such times, he treated those passers-by and tourists-to-his-bench with the same indifference as the cars on the street, knowing that any attempt to acknowledge them would be ignored anyway.

I think the opening is probably not the strongest, but the story starts properly within the next few pages.

From Watchers of the Night:

"It's the same every night. I know this is a dream. Not like one of those dreams  where you wake up from and think man that was crazy. Not even close. Everything's to normal."

----

Of course, that no-one ever spoke to him was definitely a red flag, too. And if he was being completely honest with himself, not being spoken to really was the worst part. It was like he wasn't there, and no matter how hard he tried, people just looked right through him.

So, do you think this book could be for you?

Full review to come later this week.
